As I have mentioned in Why This Blog?, my children that have written poetry are between the ages of fourteen and twenty-one. I've uploaded their poems, which glorify God, in separate posts on this blog for you to enjoy.

I've called this blog "Verses to the King," which is based on the words of the psalmist that say, "To the choirmaster: according to Lilies. A Maskil of the Sons of Korah; a love song. My heart overflows with a pleasing theme; I address my verses to the king; my tongue is like the pen of a ready scribe." (Psa 45:1).

Why This Blog?

I have five children, ranging in age from thirteen to twenty-three years old.  From time to time, they like to write poems, aside from the toddler, and some of their work is worth sharing.  The ones who wrote poems are ages seven, ten, twelve, and fourteen.  Well, this weekend, they all wrote some poems, and I asked the oldest to type them all up for a blog, so I could post them online for others to read.  I also asked her to write up the testimony she shared on Sunday with me about how this began this weekend.  Here's what she wrote:

This is how the story begins: Late Friday night in the middle of our family prayer meeting, I (Charity) had been praying. As I was, I asked God to give me the words to a poem I wanted to write about Daddy. And I trusted that he would grant my request.

Later that night, after our family prayer meeting had ended, I went to bed. As I lay on my pillow, four lines of verse simultaneously popped into my head, all of them rhyming perfectly and flowing. I could hardly believe it. But these were not words concerning Daddy. They were totally different.

When this happened, I really wished I had had a piece of paper and a pen handy, but since it was quite late, and because of the fact that I would have to go through special efforts to get my notebook, I decided to wait till morning to write down the lines. "Hopefully I’ll remember them," I thought.

The next morning, I woke up around 7:55AM. And I had a bad sore throat. But, it wasn’t really that big of a surprise, because I had felt it coming on the night before. So I climbed out of bed and went to get a drink of water. In the kitchen, as I drank, without even previously thinking about it, the four lines that had popped into my head last night did so once more. I was kind of surprised and decided that I would go and write them down, seeing as how I was wide awake and all. So I did.

Well, it turns out that I ended up writing several other lines of poetry just from those four lines. And before I knew it, I had composed a whole poem.

Later that same morning, I was in the bathroom washing up. By then, I had started to feel really run down, with sensitive skin, a horrible sore throat, of course, and other symptoms. I knew I was fighting off something bad. So I just prayed, “Lord, I thank you that you are going to heal me and that you are going to use this sickness for your glory.” I really trusted He would answer my prayer, although I was not sure in the least bit what He would do.

As the day wore on into the afternoon, I came down with a fever and a little nausea. My head was aching and I felt yucky. Every time I stood up, the room seemed to spin, and my head felt funny. At this point I knew that I was fighting off some nasty virus.

Surprisingly though, for the rest of that day, I continued to receive poems from the Lord. Not only that, but soon my brother, C.R. was writing poems, and then my sister Faith. Soon, my other sister, Hope. had written one as well. It was amazing! Apparently, God was answering my prayers! And this had been quite unexpected. Praise God! -- Charity, 14 years old

Therefore, based on that testimony from my daughter, I'm calling this blog "Verses to the King," which is based on the words of the psalmist that say, "To the choirmaster: according to Lilies. Flaming Sword

Lord Jesus, You are El Gibor
You are a mighty Man of War
Arise now with your flaming sword
Eternal praise shall be yours forever more.

Scriptural Basis:
The prophet Isaiah prophesied the birth of Jesus seven hundred years in advance.  He referred to Jesus, the Son, as “Mighty God,” saying, "For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace." (Isa 9:6).

That term “Mighty God” in the original Hebrew is El Gibor, one of God’s names.  It can also mean, "God-man" or "Mighty Man of war."  So I ask you, my friend, to whom does the term “us” refer in this passage, where it says, “a child is born to us” and “a Son will be given to us”?  Is it the prophet and his wife? Is it the nation of Israel?  Who do you think had a Son, called “El Gibor”?  The Hebrew word “El” means God.  Only One Person is worthy of that name, and that is the Son of God Himself.

Give Your Life to Jesus

The world just might appease us,
But the greater One is Jesus.
People say, “God’s a fool!
Our ways are slick and cool.”

But we say, “God is smart!
He knows how to do His part.”
So give your life to Him.
Repent and turn from sin.

Your life is in God’s hands.
He is in command.
But the choice still remains yours.
Will you open or shut the door?

The God of all creation

Out of His Love

Jesus died for every soul.
He even died for all the low.

Jesus died upon a cross,
Paying for us all the loss.

He spilled His Blood
Out of His love.

Nothing Will Separate

 No trouble can be found

Where you are on your own,
Left bleeding on the ground,
Forsaken and alone.

The hardships that you face,
The dangers or the sword,
No time, nor depth, nor space
Can keep you from the Lord.

Throughout the fiery flames,
The testing of the heart,
His love will still remain
And grace will not depart.

Scriptural basis for the poem:

"What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth. Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. Safe

When Jesus comes to save the ones
Who lived as they were told,
He’ll save from all oppression,
From grief, from hurt, from cold.

From all troubles surrounding us,
Burdens that weigh us down.
When we go to be with Jesus,
Like a fawn, we’ll freely bound.

From darkness into light we’ll go,
Minds innocent and clear.
No more evil will we know,
Safe from all of fear.

From all of death, from lies, from hate,
Far away from harm.
When Christ comes, we won’t have to wait.
He’ll hold us in His arms.

We’ll live with Christ in perfect peace,
Consumed in heaven’s light.
All those considered low and least
Will be the greatest in God’s sight.

The Meaning of Life

 The reason that I live,
The reason I have life,
And my whole heart I give:
It’s all because of Christ.

One’s life holds much more meaning
Than time just passing by.
It’s more than you are seeing,
To just be born, then die.

For Jesus said He’s Life,
And life He gave to you.
He is Love and Light.
In Him we live brand new.

Life continues on,
Even after death.
Will you join heaven’s throng
At your final breath?

We find reality
In Christ, our gracious Lord;
For He who makes things be
 Can cut the Golden Cord.

Our time while here on earth,
Each moment of each day,
Is of such priceless worth,
Yet we give it all away

To Him who’s worth our lives,
Because He gave His own.

For serving God alone.

This life is not in vain,

The Noble Wife

Worth more than a ruby
Is a wife of noble stature.
Lacking nothing valued,
Her husband trusts in her.

She does not bring him harm
Throughout her godly life.
She works with energy.
She is a faithful wife.

She welcomes all the poor;
Those who aren’t well fed.
For her house she doesn’t fear.
They’re clothed in colored thread.

She welcomes those in need.
Idle bread she will not taste.
Her speech in filled with wisdom,
And her words don’t go to waste.

Even beauty fades.
Charm can lead astray.
A wife who fears the Lord,
She is to be praised.

When you find a wife,
A gift from God you find.
And you are surely blessed
If she’s of noble kind.

Now I'd like to ask a very important question.

Do You Want to Know Him?
If you want to know Jesus personally, you can. It all begins when you repent and believe in Jesus.  Do you know what God's Word, the Bible says?

“Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God, and saying, ‘The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.’” (Mar 1:14b-15).  He preached that we must repent and believe.

Connected to the Vine

Jesus said He is the Vine.
He is the source of the wine
And the fruit that we bear;
All the love that we share.
So without Him we are not fine.

Without that connection to Christ
How can we have any life?
Or do the good works
That he did at first?
Our efforts to try won’t suffice.

This is important to know,
If you want your spirit to grow.
Then when you’ve become
As one with the Son,
You’ll have some good fruit to show.

Marriage Feast

For the wedding of his son
A king gave a banquet
Inviting the guests to come,
A place for all to sit

But none would come,
Not even some
He sent more invitations
But none paid attention

And so he employed
His army to destroy
Those people in turn,
Their city they burned

His servants went out
Into the street
To invite everyone
That they would meet

So they went all around,
Calling those that they found
And the hall was filled,
As the king had willed

When the king saw the guests,
A man was not dressed
In the proper attire
That weddings require

The king asked him how
To the banquet he got
Though he clearly was now
In wedding clothes not

Since the man he had asked
Was without a remark
By the king he was cast
Out into the dark

You may be appalled
But though many are called
Just a few are elected
Whom the king has selected

My daughter wrote this poem about the marriage feast, based on the parable Jesus told in Matthew 22:1-14. You Fill Me Up

You fill me up

I never run dry

You brim my cup

With grace from on high

You pour out your love

And complete my heart

You descend like a dove

Holy Spirit You are

Saturated I flow

With living springs

Staying in Christ

I mount up with wings

The more that I do

Your will each day

Your love flows through

All I do and say

Deep from my heart

After my daughter brought me her finished poem, I could see that it was very good, so I suggested some changes to it, which she incorporated into it.  I hope this poem blesses you.  Here is the Scriptural basis for it:

Now when all the people were baptized, Jesus was also baptized, and while He was praying, heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came out of heaven, "You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased." (Luk 3:21-22)

"Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led around by the Spirit in the wilderness." (Luk 4:1)

"And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit," (Eph 5:18)

Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. "He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, 'From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.'"  (Joh 7:37-38)

"And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance." (Act 2:4)

"And when they had prayed, the place where they had gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God with boldness." (Act 4:31)

"And the disciples were continually filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit."  (Act 13:52)

"But being full of the Holy Spirit, [Stephen] gazed intently into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God;" (Act 7:55)

"For [Barnabas] was a good man, and full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And considerable numbers were brought to the Lord." (Act 11:24)

Good Shepherd

 The Shepherd loves His sheep

He’s sad when they get lost

At times they choose to stray

Once saved at such a cost

He takes the time to train them

To listen to His voice

To follow His commands

But still, they have a choice

He tells them not to want

To act like Him and share

Then led to calm waters

He restores them there

They’re led down righteous paths

And guided where to go

All taught of what is good

So that His ways they'll know

Though death may come their way

To try to kill the sheep

They do not fear evil

Remembering, “He’s with me.”

The Shepherd’s staff has taught

The ones who don’t know how

To keep them on the straight path

That leads beyond the clouds

A table is prepared

Before their enemies' eyes

For the one the Lord anoints

Whose cup will not run dry

Both good and love shall follow

The sheep now and forever

And soon one day, someplace

They’ll all be together

Mirror of Christ

 Make me a mirror

Of your awesome love.

Give me the tears

Of my God above.

Set me apart

With Christ as my King.

Shine through my heart

Remove the bad things.

But before I reflect

The glory of God,

You must perfect

My heart with the rod.

Dead to myself,

I want all of Christ.

I’ll store heaven’s wealth,

By a true, holy life.

Once this is done,

And I’m pure through and through,

Oh, holiest One

I’ll reflect you.

But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit. (2Co 3:18) If you look closely at the photo above, you can see a woman looking at her own image in the mirror, and the face of Christ is also being reflected back, as well.  It expresses the idea that my daughter is trying to convey with her poem, as does the excerpt below.

"Amy Carmichael, took a group of children to see a traditional goldsmith at work in India. In the middle of a charcoal fire was a curved roof tile. On the tile was a mixture of salt, tamarind fruit, and brick dust, and embedded in this mixture was the gold. As the fire devoured the mixture, the gold became purer. The goldsmith took the gold out with tongs, and if it was not pure enough, replaced it in the fire with new mixture. But each time it was replaced, the heat was made hotter than before. The group asked him, 'How do you know when the gold is pure?' He replied, 'When I can see my face in it.'” (Amy Carmichael, Learning Of God, (London: SPCK, 1983), 50.)

Amy had it right, as the Scripture says, "He will sit as a smelter and purifier of silver, and He will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, so that they may present to the LORD offerings in righteousness. (Mal 3:3)
