God-Given Rest

The Sabbath for man was made
That he might find rest from his labor
God loves us and had us in mind,
So He actually did us a favor.

The pressures of toil in life
Can alter our focus and tire;
In peaceful repose on His Day,
Strength to press on is inspired.

Dislike we the laying aside
Of worldly affairs and concerns?
May our hearts in His rest find delight,
Unanxious our cares to return.

For His rest was not purposed for pleasure--
Doing whatever we please.
However, our worship He seeks
And that Spirit-led prayer on knees.

-- Charity, girl, age 17

Scriptural Basis:
"By the seventh day God completed His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made." (Gen 2:2-3 NASB)

"Jesus said to them, 'The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.'" (Mar 2:27-28 NASB)

"Yet those who wait for the LORD Will gain new strength; They will mount up with wings like eagles, They will run and not get tired, They will walk and not become weary." (Isa 40:31 NASB)

"'If because of the sabbath, you turn your foot From doing your own pleasure on My holy day, And call the sabbath a delight, the holy day of the LORD honorable, And honor it, desisting from your own ways, From seeking your own pleasure And speaking your own word, Then you will take delight in the LORD, And I will make you ride on the heights of the earth; And I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father, For the mouth of the LORD has spoken."  (Isa 58:13-14 NASB)

"Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.” (Joh 4:23-24, NIV)

Do You Want to Know Him?
If you want to know Jesus personally, you can. It all begins when you repent and believe in Jesus.  Do you know what God's Word, the Bible says?

“Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God, and saying, ‘The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.’” (Mar 1:14b-15).  He preached that we must repent and believe.

Please see my explanation of this in my post called "Do You Want to Know Jesus?"

Full of His Goodness

Hillside Glory

To God we give thanks for this year
Through which we have been brought,
For blessings which we asked of Him,
As well as those unsought.

From greatest joy on mountain peaks,
His streams of blessings flow,
Refreshing weary travelers
In the Valley of the Shadow.

May thankfulness within us spring
For trials that we face.
His goodness may seem absent,
But abounding is His grace.

He shows His love in many ways,
Our lives so frail sustains.
He proves to us that He is good.
How then can we complain?

-- Charity, girl, age 17

Scriptural Basis:
"Men shall speak of the power of Your awesome acts, And I will tell of Your greatness. They shall eagerly utter the memory of Your abundant goodness And will shout joyfully of Your righteousness." (Psa 145:6-7 NASB)

Wash Your Robes

Has not my Word shown
Your body's a member of Christ?
It’s not your own.
You’ve been bought with a price.

Take your evil deeds
Out of My sight.
Stop doing wrong;
Learn to do right.

With a heart that is torn,
In repentance, now seek Me.
For sin you must mourn.
Wash your hands off completely.

Though your sins are as scarlet,
I’ll cleanse you completely,
Make your heart white as snow
If you humbly entreat Me.

-- Anonymous

Scriptural Basis:
“Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take away the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? May it never be!” (1Co 6:15)

“Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.” (1Co 6:19-20)

“Wash and make yourselves clean. Take your evil deeds out of my sight; stop doing wrong. Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.” (Isa 1:16-17, NIV)

“But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, 'God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.' Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be miserable and mourn and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you." (Jas 4:6-10)

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted." (Mat 5:3-4)

“’Come now, and let us reason together,’ Says the LORD, "Though your sins are as scarlet, They will be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They will be like wool.’” (Isa 1:18)

Cross Bearing

-- An Acrostic --

                                     Christ being your sole Headmaster,
Run with great love and passion,
Obeying His great and high call,
                                     Surrendering to Him your all,
Striving to please Him no matter what.

Being all that He wants you to be,
                                     Enduring all shame and reproach,
                                     Admitting that you’re so unworthy,
Robed with humility as a cloak,
                                     Imitating Christ’s behavior,
Not moving your eyes from Jesus’ face,
Going for that straight, narrow door.

--Hope, girl, age 14

Scriptural basis:
“And He was saying to them all, ‘If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me.’” (Luk 9:23; cf., Mat 16:24; Mar 8:34)

"Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God." (Heb 12:1-2)

"Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it." (Mat 7:13-14)

"Strive to enter through the narrow door; for many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able." (Luk 13:24)

“Find out what pleases the Lord.” (Eph 5:10. NIV)

"I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me."  (Gal 2:20)

"But may it never be that I would boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world."  (Gal 6:14)

Beckoned

Jesus wants a hug
From little boys and girls.
Though busy at His work,
They’re so adorable.

He loves to hear their laughter;
It brings Him such delight.
Oh, can’t you hear the Master
As warmly, He invites:

“Let the little ones come to Me.
Don’t keep them from My side.
For such as these I came to live
And on the cross to die.
And such as these possess My Kingdom,
City of the Light.

“Don’t worry, little ones.
Come sit down on My knee.”
He turns His ear to them.
“What would you like to tell Me?

“I’m managing the universe,
From galaxies to beating hearts.
But I want you to know My love for you infinite,
To know it from the start.”

-- Charity, girl, age 17

Scriptural basis:
"Then some children were brought to Him so that He might lay His hands on them and pray; and the disciples rebuked them. But Jesus said, "Let the children alone, and do not hinder them from coming to Me; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." After laying His hands on them, He departed from there." We Want to be Accepted

We want to be liked by the world,
Accepted as one of their own.
So that we don’t offend,
We fail to defend
The truth which in God’s Word is shown.

We want to be liked by the world,
Accepted in full recognition.
So the clothing we wear
Is no different than theirs.
Then how will they know we’re Christian?

We want to be liked by the world,
Which leads to a meaningless chat.
We lock up good words,
‘Cause they really prefer
That you not speak of Christ and all that.

We want to be liked by the world,
But we can’t befriend them and God both.
To be on their terms
For acceptance affirms
That we’ve cheated on our Betrothed.

-- Charity, girl, age 17

Scriptural basis:
"You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. Or do you think Scripture says without reason that the spirit he caused to live in us envies intensely?” (Jas 4:4-5, NIV)

"Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever." (1Jn 2:15-17, NASB)

"'If you belonged to the world, it would love you as His own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.” (Jn 15:19, NIV)

"“But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ.” (Php 3:17, NIV)

“What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?” (Mk 8:36, NIV)

"And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect." (Rom 12:2 NASB)

"Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments, but rather by means of good works, as is proper for women making a claim to godliness." (1Ti 2:9-10 NASB)

"In the same way, you wives, be submissive to your own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the word, they may be won without a word by the behavior of their wives, as they observe your chaste and respectful behavior. Your adornment must not be merely external--braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses; but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God." Compassion for the Lost

Sorrow for the Perishing

Our hearts are so hard
That we can’t shed one tear
For the masses plunging toward hell.
Our feelings have grown to be
So numb and so dry
That we only care for ourselves.

While Jesus is weeping for multitudes falling
Like sand to eternal destruction,
How could we be void
Of that same intense love,
Passing sinners without preaching salvation.

Lord, give me compassion
Deep down in my heart
That when I am passing them by,
I’d reach out to a soul
That’s so precious, You cry.

-- Charity, girl, age 17
(with contributions from family members)

Scriptural basis:
"I speak the truth in Christ—I am not lying, my conscience confirms it through the Holy Spirit— I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were cursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my people, those of my own race." (Ro 9:1-3)

"Since, then, we know what it is to fear the Lord, we try to persuade others. What we are is plain to God, and I hope it is also plain to your conscience...For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died." (2 Cor 5:11-14)

God's Eternal Ways

Truth Outside of Time

Thy law is truth eternal,
The guideline for our lives.
Timeless morals set in stone
By which we must abide.*

The world and people change
But God has testified
To what is good and bad,
And this won’t change with time.

We’re free from sacrifices,
From rites and regulations,
But not from God’s eternal ways
In place before Creation.

What was evil then is evil now,
Even though we’re saved by grace.
 His laws will never cease.
They reach for both forevers.
Though heaven and earth will vanish,
His righteous words will never!

Eternal God has never changed.
His ways remain the same.
Nothing's hidden from His eyes.
All our motives and actions He sees.
We cannot lead lawless lives,
But must follow His righteous decrees.

-- Charity, girl, age 17

Scriptural Basis and Commentary:
"'Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.'" (Lk 21:33)

"For, 'All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord stands forever.' And this is the word that was preached to you." (1 Pe 1:24-25)

"Although they know God's righteous decrees that those who do such things deserve death, they no only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them." (Rom 1:32)

"But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code." (Ro 7:6, NIV)

Of the New Covenant, the Scripture says, "This is the covenant I will make with them after that time, says the Lord. I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds." (Heb 10:16, NIV; cf., Heb 8:10)

"Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but what matters is the keeping of the commandments of God." (1 Co 7:19, NIV)

The Lord Jesus said, "For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.” (Mat 5:18)

This is something that we as disciples of His need to understand.  To help us understand what He meant, let’s look at some verses from Psalm 119, which is all about the psalmists love for God’s Word.

"Your word, O Lord, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens. Your faithfulness continues through all generations; you established the earth, and it endures. Your laws endure to this day, for all things serve you." (Ps 119:89-91)

“Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, And Your law is truth…Your commandments are my delight. Your testimonies are righteous forever; Give me understanding that I may live.” (Psa 119:142,143b,144).

The psalmist was praying to God,
          “Your commands are my delight.
                   Your statutes are forever right.”

According to Albert Barnes’ Notes on the Bible, he states regarding Ps 119:142:

"Thy righteousness is an everlasting righteousness - It never changes...as God himself never changes, so it is with his law. That law is founded on eternal truth, and can never change."

"And thy law is the truth - It is founded on “truth;” on the reality of things. It is so essentially founded on truth, it springs so certainly out of truth, or out of the reality of things, that it may be said to be the truth itself. He who understands the law of God understands what truth is, for it is the expression and the exponent of that which is true."

“You are near, O LORD, And all Your commandments are truth. Of old I have known from Your testimonies That You have founded them forever.” (Psa 119:151-152)

"Concerning thy testimonies, I have known from of old that thou hast founded them forever - “From” eternity, and “for” eternity. They were laid in the eternity past; they will continue in the eternity to come. They are based on eternal principles of right; they will never be changed. Such a conviction will do much to keep the soul steady and firm in the trials and uncertainties of life. Whatever may change, God’s law does not change; whatever is new, that is not new; whatever will vanish away, that will remain." -- Albert Barnes.

*My father explains it like this: "We don't live by the Law of Moses, according to the written code, but God's eternal laws have been etched on our hearts. Now we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code (Ro 7:6). We are not to concern ourselves with ceremonial law like circumcision, rituals, dietary laws, or animal sacrifices. We are not endeavoring to keep up the Law of Moses in conjunction with the gospel of Christ. We are not justified by doing the works of the Law.  It is only when we put our faith in Christ that He justifies us, so that we have true righteousness, the righteousness of God, and this is the intent or “end goal” of the law. Once we are justified, we will be led by the Spirit to be a doer of the Law (James 1:25; 4:11). Just remember that we can do nothing apart from the Lord Jesus (Jn 15:5), and if you keep His commandments, you will abide in His love (Jn 15:10). It's not something you have to force, or do legalistically, but it happens as you open up and receive the Holy Spirit, allowing Him to flow through you."
